The Importance of Mobile Site Speed

Remember that one movie when those two guys say:

“I feel the need – the need for speed!”

(Top Gun,” Dir. Tom Scott. Paramount Pictures, 1986)

Well… we may not be flying fighter jets, but any excuse to wear aviator shades and a bomber jacket is good enough for me!

What’s so important about mobile site speed? Let’s just dive right on in.

  • 64% of all online retail traffic is mobile.
  • However, the conversion rate (browsers who become buyers by the end of their visit) on mobile is only about 50% of that from desktop.
  • A 0.1 second decrease in page load time can result in a 5% boost in your conversion rate.

So, what does that mean? It means more people are browsing on mobile, but fewer are buying from there.

Some things to consider when formulating your digital strategy:

  • Ensure that processes and apps for your site and store are optimized for speed in loading, etc. If your site takes too long to load, you may miss out on the opportunity to present what you have to offer to your potential customer;
  • Have an easy to navigate and use website
  • Make it easy for your customers to provide the information you need from them to serve them; for example, if you are needing information that consists of numerical characters only, provide them with a numerical keyboard to simplify the process;
  • Make use of features such as autofill and one-tap sign-in.

Last, but certainly not least – as you make these adjustments to your site and store, test, Test, TEST! Testing is not a one-time deal. Just as a vehicle needs ongoing maintenance to keep it functioning properly, regular checks “under the hood” of your website and store will help to pinpoint potential problems and opportunities for improvement.
